Each Summer Pūhoro runs a STEM internship programme with ākonga Māori from across Aotearoa. This summer we welcomed 54 interns and 28 industry partners into our whānau.
The programme was designed to give rangatahi the opportunity to learn from leading STEM organisations, and for these organisations to learn from a unique rangatahi Māori perspective.
Since the formation of the programme five years ago, Pūhoro has completed 176 Summerships. Of these tauira, opportunities have been extended to rangatahi as early as Year 12 with majority of our cohort in tertiary or postgraduate study.
This summer our interns are working on a variety of meaningful projects with Māori at the core, from health equity to agriculture predator detection to GIS and LIDAR mapping.
"It's always exciting to see the breadth and depth of projects our interns are involved in each year. One of the key foundations of the programme is ensuring our tauira are involved in impactful projects where they can add real value.", said Jade Beazley, Summership Programme Lead.
The success of the prgoramme wouldn't be possible without the commitment of our funding and host organisations.
"We commend each of our many partner organisations, hosts and supervisors who demonstrate a commitment to increasing the number of rangatahi engaging in STEMM research, work experience and employment. We thank them for the opportunity for our learners to enter your organisations and for providing a safe space where they can learn and thrive.", said Kemp Reweti, Manahautū
The programme will conclude on February 12 and we will celebrate the success of our interns alongside our stakeholders at a Pō Whakanui.
