Internship Presentation — Luke August and Taine Davis

Two students were tasked with creating and designing an artificial hand as the current technological environment allows the production and design of artificial hands.

Taine Davis (Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāti Tupaea) and Luke August (Te Āti Haunui-a-Paparangi, Ngāti Hauiti, Muaūpoko) interned together on a project under the supervision of Dr. Mahonri Owen. They were tasked with creating and designing an artificial hand as the current technological environment allows the production and design of artificial hands.

This project required a student to design and 3D print an electromechanical hand that could be controlled through EMG (electromyography). Luke and Taine were able to demonstrate live at the event their artificial hand and the different positions they had programmed it to perform. Furthermore, as part of their research they were able to look at the connection between EMG and the creation of the hand and how that connects to mātauranga Māori.
